Safety

South Africa's roads are well-maintained and safe for driving, however it is important to be aware of a few points. In addition, although crime is not as rampant as international media would lead one to believe, it can nevertheless be a problem. The key is to be aware of your surroundings at all times.

  • Note that in some rural or remote areas especially areas like the Transkei Eastern Cape. Cattle and other animals such as buck may be crossing the road. Reduce your speed and be very careful when travelling after dark.
  • Be on the look out for pedestrians walking in the yellow lines on the roadside as it is a common practice particularly after dark.
  • In city areas, drive with your doors locked and when possible with your windows mostly closed. Do not engage in conversation with strangers at traffic stops etc.
  • When possible, drive with your valuables in the boot and not boldly displayed.
  • Petty crime such as car break ins are unfortunately a problem so always store your possessions in the boot or under a hatch back  at all times.

  • Do not pick-up hitch hikers or anyone no matter what their story.
