Aliwal Shoal is a scuba divers paradise. Situated 30 minutes South of Durban international airport, this short journey brings you to one of the top 10 dive sites in the world. TheAliwal Shoal is a rocky reef which is the remains of an ancient sand dune approximately 5km off the coast of KwaZulu Natal South Africa. The reef plays host to many kinds of hard and soft corals and a variety of tropical and subtropical fish species. Aliwal Shoal was named after the sinking of the 3 Masted vessel the "Aliwal", Captained by James Anderson in 1849. There are two wrecks near the reef that are prime sites for divers. The Norwegian bulk carrier called the MV Produce which sank in 1974 and the Nebo which sank in 1884. Aliwal Shoal has some stunning marine life which explains its popularity with divers. The Shoal is known for its abundance of Ragged tooth sharks (Raggies) or sand tiger sharks which congregate in the winter months  between May and November to mate. A specialist Tiger shark dive is also very popular here. Divers wishing to dive Aliwal Shoal are well served by a number of dive centres and accommodation providers located in the nearest town of Umkomaas. Aliwal Shoal is rated as one of the top 10 dive sites in the world.

Launch from the Umkomaas river mouth or a beach launch if the river is running low. The Aliwal Shoal is approximately 7kms approx from the Umkomaas river. The inflatable dive rib boats launch through the Indian Ocean surf which can be a bit hair raising at times, but all part of the fun.  Local skippers will guide you through the often difficult surf to this divers paradise in the Indian Ocean.

On the journey to Aliwal Shoal you will often see Dolphins, Whales, Turtles. When you reach Aliwal Shoal you will also find numerous reef fish, corals, sharks, including Ragged tooth sharks, Zambezis, Tiger sharks, Hamerhead sharks.
